GLPs

I realize this may be old, but has anyone seen this video? The text moves quickly, but is really powerful.

I've spent hours the last few weeks looking into Social Action - Global Learning Projects (GLP).  Not that this video is a GLP, but I'm going to have to create one of my own very soon and I'm starting to get nervous.

Sure, I could make something somewhat easy but it would probably turn out pretty lame [like this] which has a good message and all, but is poorly presented.

I want to make a project that is:
1) meaningful
2) intelligent
3) simple
and
4) beautiful.

I need to have at least 3 classrooms participating in whatever project I create before I can graduate (eek!).  It doesn't have to, but I'd like it to have a social action emphasis.  I want it to be relatively simple, so teachers can easily participate without too much preparation or time.  I'm leaning towards something techy and artistic.. but can't figure out WHAT I'm actually going to do, yet.  Any ideas?

Break is Over :(

Time is certainly flying.
Kristen came and went, the semester is already 2 weeks in,
and I just realized I haven't blogged in a few weeks!

Here's a run-down:

Determined to enjoy Dominica, rain or no rain,
Kristen and I headed back to Red Rock for round 2.

We enjoyed cocktails and books, but sadly no swimming.

Why no swimming?
Because every 10 minutes we'd have to pull out our umbrellas!

On Kristen's birthday, we made some super yummy
peanut butter and nutella cupcakes and went to
De Champs for a little celebration with a BIG candle!

I took my first transport in to Roseau by myself
to make it to an early dentist appointment.
Kristen and Brandi joined me later for
a little somethin' somethin' with The Spice Guy.

It was really nice to have Kristen here.
It's time for our 10 year high school reunion.
Back then I don't think either of us would have imagined
that we would be living internationally.

But, such is life.  A Priceless Adventure.

Re-Kindling

Last summer I bought a Kindle to bring with me here to Dominica.  I had such high expectations of sitting on the beach, reading to my hearts content.  What I didn't anticipate was the cost of books!  Who can afford to pay $10-12 every time they want to read a new book?  The cost was going to add up too quickly, so I tucked my Kindle away and stuck with borrowed books.

Then, yesterday, I found a program called Calibre.  Calibre is an e-book syncing program that lets you store your books, convert books from one file type to another, and then sync them to any e-reading device.  I was doubtful, but it worked!

Those with a little imagination and uTorrent can connect the dots on where these new books all came from.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

I realize that I’m behind the crowd with reading this book, but I think it’s interesting that I started reading it on the day Osama bin Laden was captured and killed.  I wish I had read it earlier.  Everything about this fictional story of 2 remarkable women tugged at my heartstrings.  I was outraged at the men for their treatment of women and girls, and was so touched by the ending.  If you have never read a book about women of the Middle East, this is a great introduction.

Congrats!

Congratulations to Chelsea and the Horsley Home on their two new baby boys!!  Did you know that 1 in 33 births are to twins?  Check out this awesome Mother's Day infographic.

The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory

This book was not as good as The Other Boleyn Girl.   It seemed to drag at the end, going back and forth between the three women: Anne of Cleves, Jane Boleyn and Katherine Howard.  Although I loved finding out what happened to King Henry’s next wives, the novel itself fell short for me.
